“Eriophyes cyodoniensis,” more commonly known as bermudagrass mites, are tiny, worm-like arachnids that live and multiply in the leaf sheaths of Bermuda grass varieties. The increasing reports of bermudagrass mite infestation are known to be caused by higher mowing heights, poor irrigation, and the cultivation of newer, more susceptible grass varieties. At America’s Best Lawncare, we understand your need to keep your lawn pest-free; hence we provide control approaches that utilize professional-grade miticides to ensure superior results. Our lawn care experts will assess the condition of your lawn to determine the extent of damage as a result of the existing bermudagrass mite infestation. We use industry-latest tools in the implementation of extensive treatments to control their growth at different life stages.

As a premiere lawn care company, America’s Best Lawncare has advanced knowledge of eradicating bermudagrass mites in residential and commercial lawns. We use multiple chemistries to ensure consistent curative applications to control the bermudagrass mite population and effectively minimize resistance development in the long run. Our lawn care professionals develop a strategy consisting of several spray applications to cover multiple lifecycles, so your lawn doesn’t suffer from infestations in the future. As part of our bermudagrass mite control service, we remove damaged plant materials and clippings to establish quality improvements on your lawn. Even better than waiting until these pests invade your property and destroy plants, we also offer a preventative program to protect your lawn all year round.

Identification

The immature Bermudagrass Mite is a translucent bodied mite which is invisible to the naked eye at only 0.1-0.15 mm in length. As they mature the adult stage is slightly larger with a creamy white elongated abdomen up to 0.2 mm long. Infestations of mites are typically identified by the characteristic symptoms of plant injury in the field. Once visible injury has occurred, pest pressure must be considered to be extensive. Infected turf first exhibits a slight yellowing of leaf tips followed by shortening of internodes and leaves, producing a rosetted or tufted growth known as “witches broom”. Severe infestations result in stand loss, and large dead areas soon become infested with weeds. Damage is usually most severe during hot, dry conditions.

Life Cycle

The Bermudagrass Mite has a very short lifecycle (10-14 days) and multiple generations per season. Bermudagrass Mite is physically difficult to get to as it lives in tight spaces between leaf sheaths. Development from egg to adult requires 5-10 days. After eggs hatch, they pass through 2 nymphal instar stages and molt to adults. All life stages live together, protected under the leaf sheath, and often 100-200 mites and eggs can be observed under a single leaf blade. Mites are spread on grass clippings and have been observed hitch-hiking on other turf insects. Dispersal in wind is also common.
